Urban Synthesis seeks to create a new mixed-use area with particular emphasis on strong public spaces, recreation and civic participation. We saw this venture as a response to the hyperdense conditions of greek urban centers which lack functional public spaces.

The composition used the natural elements as a point of departure; a waterfront on the southeast, combined with a gradual upward slope were introduced as an initial set of restrictions. On the northeast region, the highest point of elevation in this new urban neighborhood, the residents can enjoy a community center along with a cafeteria and an open park. This is also the starting point of a pedestrian bridge leading gradually to the waterfront which is also a designed landscape for active and passive recreation. Under the elevated bridge one can find a forest, with sheltered spaces that function as a center for environmental education and tree nurseries, where regionally significant seeds grow to be planted locally in the neighborhood. This urban forest is also the starting point for a network of green spaces that also function as the ‘backyards’ of the residents.
Each block of two or three buildings is articulated around this semi-public spaces. The built forms themselves host commercial and retail uses on the ground floor that account for the necessary foot traffic, while residential uses are ‘pushed’ one level above.
